Business Tips From A Pro

August 22, 2012 by Maggie 1 Comment

The best business tips come from those that have been successfully working on getting their businesses off the ground for a while. Like 5 years. You can learn a lot in that time and have a lot of advice to offer. Time is the best teacher.

So before you get too far on your path of self employment, be sure you are gathering information and picking up some tips from people who are actually doing the same things you want to be doing. One of my favorite things to do is read the designer interviews on Etsy. Although any blog that does interviews with handmade business owners or even any kind of small business owner is worth the read because you’ll either reaffirm that you’ve been doing everything right or you’ll pick up some tips.

I particularly like this article I found on Simple Organized Living with tips from a mom and small business owner that’s been working hard for 5 years. She talks about her experiences from the beginning and what she’s learned. Here’s the short breakdown:

1. It takes time — LOTS of time.

2. It’s not always glamorous.

3. People will think you’re weird.

4. A closed door = an open window.

5. It’s only worth it IF you love it!

Read the details on Simple Organized Living.

What tips would you give to someone just starting their business?

You certainly do have to love your business to make it worthwhile and encourage genuine enthusiasm in other people. Creating, developing and promoting any business takes endless hours of time and can fill seven days a week easily. I also agree that people will often think you’re weird and sometimes you really are!
