Photography is probably the biggest issue I struggle with when it comes to my Etsy shop. I have a pretty nice camera, but I’m not photographer so no matter how much of the heavy lifting my camera does, the photos aren’t always exactly what I imagined. I’m learning pretty quickly that no matter how good of a camera you have, you will need to know some photography basics to really get those product photos to be the most appealing they can be.
In collecting articles on how to set your aperture and shutter speed or how to build your own light box, I stumbled upon this very basic but completely essential article with the basic starter photography things every blogger (and online seller) needs to know. Some of these seem like second nature, but it helped reading about the basics from a real photographer who has much more insight than little old me. Here are the bare bones of Helena’s 6 Things Every Blogger Should Know About Photography:
- Shoot in good lighting.
- Beware of colors.
- Composition matters.
- Watch your backgrounds.
- Capture details.
- Edit your photos.
All of these seem pretty basic right? Well that’s absolutely true, because they are photography basics that everyone should know before they even try to take their first product photos. This article does a great job of explaining how beginner photographers can go about achieving these 6 things in their photographs. So check out the full article for details and see if you’ve been doing it right (or wrong) all along!
