Do you dream too small? After all, having smaller dreams means we will be more likely to succeed and then we will be happy with ourselves. Right?
The problem with that kind of thinking is that you may never realize your full potential. You may never realize just how amazing you, your life and your creative business could be.
Bummer.
Big dreams are scary, tough and take a lot of work. You might fail – but then you might not. Let’s look at some ways to dream bigger.
Being afraid of failure. When was the last time you failed at something? It’s easy to throw out the word “fail” when you don’t meet a goal but really, IS it failure? Just because you didn’t meet the goal as outlined did you make it part way? Did you learn something from not meeting the goal? Did you move on to do other things, maybe better things, because that goal didn’t work out? Most importantly, did the sky fall? Did the worse case scenario even come close to happening? Probably not. As you can see, not meeting your goal or not realizing your dreams the way you had intended isn’t the end of the world. In fact, there are probably lessons to learn that will help you with your next BIG dream.
Do you underestimate your talents or abilities? You’ve probably read a story where someone got offered a job and after accepting it thought, “Wait, I can’t do this job!” and then they went on to some amazing things. The thing is if you sit down and make a list of things you are good at and believe you are ONLY good at those things you will be less likely to take chances – to dream BIG. So make a list of what you feel comfortable with, things you are good at, at then bump things up a notch. What if you were 10% smarter what would your list look like then? What if you suddenly had a million dollars fall into your lap or all of the energy and stamina of a triathlete? Then what would your dreams look like? Chances are you are grossly underestimating yourself and you just need to turn your self-belief up a notch or two in order to dream BIG.
Roadblocks. Do you hesitate to dream big, I mean really big, because you are worried about roadblocks. Those things known, and unknown, that will crop up and delay or otherwise impede your dreams? Here is a bit of news. Roadblocks are real and they will happen. Tiny roadblocks or great big Wall of China roadblocks. But YOU can get over or around them. You can work hard, find a way, learn what needs to be learned – roadblocks are just ways of making you work harder, think smarter and prove to yourself how badly you really want to meet your goals.
Stick to it. Create your dream business or life scenario and then go get it. Don’t decide you’d really rather be a clown and join the circus next week and then decide you want to become a pediatrician the week after. Draw, plan, scheme and then implement. Decide on a dream and do your level best to make it happen. Stay focused, work hard and keep working toward your dream. Heck with the roadblocks, disappointments or self doubt! Do what you’ve been dreaming of. Create the business and life you have been dreaming of. Only BIGGER!
Have you ever had one of your dreams come true? How hard was it to make it happen and most importantly how wonderful did it feel to see it come true?
