3 Ways to Release Your Creative Genius

September 1, 2014 by CreativeIncome 2 Comments

We often think that huge creative successes are made up of luck. Maybe it’s easier to explain success that way—as a chance happening or good fortune. Some of us even tend to think that people are creative geniuses because of good genes, financially supportive families, or some other random benefit bestowed upon them.

But it just isn’t so.

While there is always some small element of luck involved in every success story, the truth is that we all have some type of creative genius inside of us, and the only way to be more creative is to work at it.

How to Be More Creative Every Day

1. Perseverance

Creative Geniuses work and change and rework and retry and pull out their genius through sheer force of will and perseverance. They earn the chance to be lucky because they keep showing up. Maybe for you, perseverance means revamping a pattern twenty times until it is just right, or trying several kinds of paint before you find THE ONE that makes your artwork look the way you envision.

2. By Doing, not Dreaming

Maybe you know exactly what it is you dream of being, or maybe you’re paralyzed because you have no idea what your passion is. The truth is, it doesn’t matter. You don’t have to know everything. You just have to keep moving forward. You just have to keep doing something, seizing the next opportunity, staying open to trying something new. It doesn’t have to fit your vision of the perfect job or the perfect life. Perfect is boring and dreams are not real. Just … do.

3. Commitment

No single act will uncover more creative powers than forcing yourself to create consistently.  You want to be a writer? A writer is someone who writes every day, so start writing. Committing to your craft may mean getting up early to have a half hour to work on your creative business before the family wakes up or the work day begins. Maybe you’ve tried to create a prototype and it’s just not coming together like you had hoped. Keep at it. Even if you have to re-created the prototype 100 times. Keeping up with a consistent, creative schedule will be the best thing for you.

I don’t know if it is serendipity or divine intervention. I was just asking myself the other day – What is my passion? I love to craft. I have been gifted with the ability to do just about anything. But I am overwhelmed trying to decide what exactly to focus on. This article found me….I am going to push forward and use my ability and I’m sure what I am destined to do will find me! Thank you.

I create daily. I am blessed to be able to work exclusively on my quilt and crochet patterns and refine, remake and rework until I’m satisfied. This is the problem, I’m never quite satisfied and I’m afraid that the finished pattern won’t be good enough for someone to purchase. Then, recently I decided I wanted a special towel basket in the bathroom for hand towels etc, and i grabbed the crochet hook and started work. I was happy with the result! I didn’t have to rework or refine anything, I loved it the way it turned out the first tome. I’m finally beginning to see that beautify is truly in the eye of the beholder, that perfection is unattainable regardless of how many times the items is reworked and that ‘refinement’ is a cop out for me to avoid exposing my creative talents to potential buyers/shoppers. Since it can’t be perfect, it has to be ‘good enough’. I’m finally ready to spread my wings and try to fly.
