7 Craft Fair Trends for 2017

March 28, 2017 by Rebecca George 5 Comments

Every year the handmade craft world has popular item themes and trends. Sometimes they are inspired by the past, while other times they are totally unique to the current market. Here are the seven coolest craft fair trends I noticed for 2017…

1. Copper Jewelry

Metal jewelry is always in style, but this year I noticed an abundance of copper accessories. One artist pointed out that the price of silver has increased a lot in recent years, so jewelry makers are seeking out other metals that are less expensive. Despite the lower price tag, copper is really beautiful and looks great on everyone! From bracelets to earrings to necklaces, copper will be big in 2017.

2. Snarky Quotes

(Fun cross-stitch hoop by StephXstitch)

Funny yet snarky quotes are also popular this year. They’re usually short and sweet, consisting of one to three words. You can buy them on cross-stitched hoop art as well as fridge magnets and prints. What a fun way to show off your sarcastic side or to give as a gift to your quirkiest friend! Better learn how to cross stitch.

3. Cacti Art

These beautiful desert plants were seen on photos transferred onto canvas, jewelry, and greeting cards. Southwestern themes have gained in popularity over the past few years, and the majestic saguaro cactus is the most recognizable. They are a big trend for 2017- just don’t touch one of you see it in real life!

4. Inlaid Stone Necklaces

Hippie-style inlaid stone necklaces continue to be found at craft shows. I noticed both sparkly druzy stones as well as subdued semiprecious gemstones necklaces. The more intricate the surrounding metalwork and etching, the better.

5. Wooden Beads

In a nod to 60s and 70s jewelry, wooden beads are back in a big way. They were paired with chain and metal beads to create contrast and texture. Wood is becoming popular again in jewelry because it’s lightweight and easy to match with most clothing colors.

Check out this Wooden Bead Necklace tutorial!

6. Coffee Beans

Another fun trend I saw at several craft shows was coffee beans in unexpected places. From candles with beans within the wax to ground coffee body scrubs, they are sure to awaken your senses! The smell is so divine and universally appreciated. Who doesn’t love coffee?!?

7. Crystal Points

Lastly, crystal points are a hot jewelry element at 2017’s craft shows. The most unique way I saw them used was in an elongated post earring wrapped with wire. Crystal points could also be found on long necklaces, hair accessories, and rings. Their natural beauty pairs well with a variety of metals.

What other big trends have you seen this year?

The best crafts I have ever sold are handmade by me and my son . Holiday wood crafts, Christmas trees, santas, snowmen, elfs, reindeer, scarecrows, Frankenstein, ghosts, ex large lighted pumpkins. We also make benches that have a large flower tray in the seat and a small chair with a flower pot in the seat with a flower in it. Great Mother’s Day gifts.
