For those of us that have worked in retail or the service industry, we know a thing or two about dealing with unpleasant customers. And also a thing or two about dealing with extremely pleasant customers. So we can luckily transfer that knowledge into our online shops and blogs, because, when it comes down to it, our customers online are expecting the same quality of service they would receive in a local boutique. For those of us that have never worked in the retail or service industry, no worries! Just make sure you treat your customers how you expect to be treated when shopping.
I’ve luckily only have pleasant experiences so far with the customers who’ve shopped in my Etsy store, with only the occasional mishap and return to deal with. However, that doesn’t mean that I’m not always looking for customer service tips and advice, because we could all use a little refresher ever now and the right?
Etsy happens to always have great tips on customer service for online sellers, because why wouldn’t they? And I stumbled upon this pretty lengthy article with some great tips. If you want to read it you can find their customer service guide here. These were the things that I found most interesting:
- Communication is key: So true. You never want to leave a message – good or bad – unanswered. If someone is complimenting you, you want to thank them and show them that you appreciate them. That’s the key to return customers. If someone has a complaint be sure to address is as quickly and as nicely as possible – even if they’re being not-so-nice.
- Honesty is best: And much more appreciated, especially if there is a chance of you getting caught up in a lie.
- Build a connection: Building connections with your customers is super important because if they like you, not just your shop, they might not only come back to shop again, but also share your shop with their friends. Word of mouth is the cheapest way to gain new customers.
- Foster repeat business: Including a handwritten thank you note or a coupon code in your shipped items is a great way to get people coming back again and again and it shows your customers that you really appreciate them.
These were just some of the tips I pulled from the article. Check out the rest of them here. \
